Dotty Didi Polymer Clay Face Beads - Summer #3
Handmade by a small group of women in Nepal as part of the 'Sammunat Project' - these women's lives have been damaged by violence of various kinds, and funds from the sale of these beads go directly to supporting and improving their lives.
Each bead is a small work of art and the result of days of skilled creating. The technique used incorporates the "millefiore" or caning tradition. First the ladies make blocks of the graduated colour blends then the colours are made into various 'dotty' designs, and finally the complex cane making up the face. NO PAINT IS USED. After being cured, each bead is painstakingly hand polished using a range of fine grit polishing papers and finished with a muslin brush. This produces the gorgeous mirror like shine that enhances the detail of each bead. No glosses or glazes are used. The whole process is a labour of love and a way that the women of Sammunat can regain their dignity, independence and lives.
To date they are making seasonal ranges of Dotty Didi beads - one for each season of the Western Calendar and a range for Christmas. A limited number of beads will be made for each range each year and that will be that! They are limited edition and the next year's range will differ in colour. They are truly collectors' items!
The beads are round slightly flattened beads approximately 20mm in diameter x 13mm thick with a horizontal hole which is approx 1mm diameter. Colours in this 3nd series include Pearl, Pink, Chartreuse, Violet.
